Cortez Pouncil

Trial Attorney

Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Cortez M. Pouncil relocated to Houston, Texas in 2004 to attend law school. What began as a temporary move quickly became permanent after he discovered Houston’s unique blend of enterprise, diversity, and community. Inspired at an early age by the work of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and their pivotal role in the civil rights movement, Cortez knew his calling was to stand for justice and serve others through the law.

Cortez began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney for Brazoria County, where he prosecuted child protection cases and developed a strong foundation in civil litigation. He later served as Regional Attorney for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, representing the state across multiple counties and advocating for the protection of vulnerable children and families.

In 2017, after nearly a decade in public service, Cortez founded The Pouncil Law Firm, built on a mission to pursue each client’s success with courage, passion, and innovation. His dedication to meaningful advocacy and impactful results continues to define his legal practice.

In May 2025, Cortez joined The Gonzalez Law Group as a Family Law Attorney, where he continues to serve clients with compassion, integrity, and a results-driven approach. His experience in both public and private sectors allows him to bring a balanced, strategic perspective to every case.

Outside the courtroom, Cortez is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., where he dedicates his time to volunteer work and community service initiatives. He is a devoted husband and father, sharing life with his wife, a family nurse practitioner based in Katy, Texas, their children, and two rescue dogs. Together, the Pouncil family enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling, and attending live music events. In his spare moments, Cortez pursues his passion for writing, often exploring topics that inspire reflection and personal growth.
