Most times when Houstonians read about prostitution arrests in the news, it’s from a sting operation or a raid of a massage parlor. People still solicit prostitutes the old fashioned way on the streets, however. In fact, over a two year period, the Houston Police Department has made 3,478 arrests related to prostitution.
The number one spot for prostitution arrest in Houston is Bissonnet Street along a 1.3-mile stretch between the Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8. 589 arrests were made on this street alone, and that doesn’t include the side streets.
The 6000-12400 block of the Gulf Freeway was also hit hard by prostitution. Over the past two years, the HPD has made 222 prostitution-related arrests at the location between US 90 and Brays Bayou.
Another area in Houston where a large number of prostitution arrest were made is the 2300-10500 block of the Southwest Freeway. Over the past two years, the HPD has made 196 arrests for prostitution-related crimes.
Hotels around George Bush Intercontinental Airport, The Galleria and downtown Houston are other locations around the city where a large number of arrests related to prostitution are made, according to the Houston Chronicle. The majority of the hotels with the highest rate of prostitution arrest are high-end, with the Hyatt Regency at 1200 Louisiana Street coming in first with 136 arrests while the JW Marriott at 5150 Wertheimer Road has had 83 arrests.
Other hot spots in Houston for prostitution include hotels around Minute Maid Park, NRG Stadium and the Westchase Shopping Center.
A first time charge for prostitution or solicitation of a prostitute can result in up to 6 months in prison and $2,000 in fines if convicted.
